I’ve always had a love for dolphins. They’re so elegant. Clean lines, powerful and joyful; to me dolphins represent much that is wonderful in life. Sure, I know they’re carnivores, and it’s not ALL fun and games, but that’s the image in my head, and it’s not necessarily about factual truth, but about personal truth.
Anyway, whatever your own truth is, dolphins seem to represent what’s best to us. SPI has a real talent for evoking that same feeling. This dolphin came from a good friend’s collection. It’s an SPI sculpture, done in either brass or bronze, I’m not certain which metal. The verdigris (the green color over the metal) has a gorgeous marbled tone. I did some research, and discovered that most of SPI’s finished colors are the result of a ‘hot patina’ process. A mixture of acids and various heat sources. But the ones that are green or muted in tone, such as this dolphin, is the result of a cold patina process. That’s pretty cool. I always thought verdigris was the result of a natural aging process. Had no idea it could be produced deliberately with a creative application of acids.
Okay, that’s all I know. Class is over. What it really comes down to is the artistic quality. The sculpt is wonderful. The proportions perfectly capture the essence of the subject. The patina is beyond description. The size is perfect. SPI ocean life sculptures come in a variety of sizes. Some of the larger pieces come in a shockingly high price. Worth every penny, I’m not disparaging the cost. But for those of us on a budget, and possibly with limited space for display, smaller is better. This one is about 8 inches in height. Large enough to have some heft, and to project a presence in a room. But not so big you have to name a room after it. “Ah, yes… we have our sculpture in the Dolphin Room, would you care to see it?”
Yeah. Me neither. I’m happier with something that fits on a coffee table, or a display shelf. Like this one. Take a look, see what you think. If our auction’s over, don’t panic. eBay has a huge variety of SPI art. With all that diversity, surely somewhere out there is the perfect one for you!
